HISTORY OF MILLBROOK
CRAFTSMANSLIKE BEGINNINGS
In 1946 when Walter Croll opened his small upholstery and bedding workshop in the Millbrook area of Southampton, majestic ships from such famous lines as Cunard, P & O and Union Castle daily sailed into Southampton Water.
The superb interiors of these vessels, which had made Britain's passenger fleet a byword for luxury and elegance, demanded the highest standard of workmanship.
The craftsmanship of Walter Croll's workshop soon began to win it a growing number of orders from discerning customers, and when the Union Castle Line awarded Millbrook a contract to refurnish and carpet their entire fleet, the success of the young Company was assured.
GROWING SUCCESS
Year by year the Company has continued to grow and prosper, using the skills employed on the luxury liners to create an ever-growing range of luxurious, high-quality furniture and achieving an enviable reputation - both in finest retail stores and among a widening circle of discerning contract customers.
Today, Millbrook craftsmanship in both bedding and upholstery is acknowledged as being of the very highest order and examples of their skill can be seen and admired in both Houses of Parliament, in Embassies around the world and in elegant private homes throughout Britain, Europe and the United States.
In addition, millions of people have unknowingly seen Millbrook craftsmanship on their television on programmes produced by TVS such as the "Ruth Rendell" mysteries. Amongst their many diverse skills Millbrook have restored antiques on display in such diverse places as Sterling Castle and Osborne House, created an artificial “Aladdin’s Cave” for a Middle Eastern Sheikh and more recently completed major work in Downing Street.

Millbrook are very much a family firm. Many of the skilled mattress and divan makers and seamstresses have followed their parents or grandparents into the Company.

,strong>POCKET SPRINGS
The pocket spring is at the heart of all our top quality sprung beds, each spring is placed into its own individual pocket and sewn all around to isolate it from its neighbours, ensuring no ‘roll-together’.
DPSS® (Double pocket spring system)
Double stacking and individually hand nested pocket springs provide superior levels of support. The top tier if the springs absorbs the majority of the weight whilst conforming to the body shape. The bottom rows resist more gently adding to the overall support and also to the longevity of the mattress, all working in harmony to ensure that your body is supported. Our unique Zonal edge springing provides extra strength to the sides of the mattress, by applying 2 rows of firmer springs on either side, ensuring no ‘roll-off’ or sleep disturbance.
HAND-SIDE STITCHING
Every mattress in the range features traditional hand-side stitching which secures the outer springs to the border at top and bottom preventing ‘roll-out’, and is the most highly skilled and labour intensive of all our operations. Side-stitching is carried out by senior upholsterers using traditional long needles and twine to make borders and edges stronger. The effects on the mattress are quite dramatic preventing the springs from distorting and extending the sleeping area right up to the edge of the bed.
DIVAN BASE
The fully sprung edge zonal divan base has a unique spring system incorporating two support levels of spring torsion with a higher gauge spring supporting the edge to prevent ‘roll-off’ and also creates a firm, supportive foundation for the mattress.
All divans are made from solid timber to carry the weight of the sumptuous mattress and load-bearing joints are secured and glued by hand for lasting strength. All divans are mounted on smooth running solid metal casters. The drawers come complete with unique, smooth ball-bearing steel action runners.
